In a surprising twist to the recent Casey Anthony trial, the 25-year-old mother was found not guilty in the murder of her two-year-old child Caylee. She has escaped the death penalty after jurors ruled that she was only guilty of providing false information to police. Final ruling, not guilty of manslaughter, not guilty of aggravated child abuse, not guilty of murder.
It was amazing that the jury found her innocent, after being charged with drugging then suffocating her young daughter then dumping her body in a Florida swamp. The six-week trial was sensationalized and has been compared to the O.J. Simpson trial. It took the jury only 10 hours to find her innocent.
The family left the court in silence, no hugs for Casey. It appears she will likely serve no jail time, even for the one count of providing false information. The defense attorney’s were so stunned, they forgot to ask for bail, so it seems she may spend one final night in jail.
With the strong evidence provided by the prosecution, it was a shocker to many following the case, including attorneys. Outraged viewers were interviewed after the verdict and screamed “This is an injustice, she is guilty!”. Unfortunately for them, with this being an acquittal means she can never go on trial again, even if she confesses in the future.
The judge offered a bit of advice to the jurors, saying it is up to them if they want to speak with the press on their verdict. The defense attorney, Jose Baez, offered a statement saying, “I can go home tonight and tell my daughter I saved a life.” It was a hard thing to swallow, knowing another child will never get to hear again.
What a sad day for a small child who tragically lost her life, let’s hope justice will prevail some day. May Caylee Anthony R.I.P.
