(7/15/11 VIDEO) BRITISH NEWSPAPER CHIEF EXECUTIVE REBEKAH BROOK FINALLY RESIGNS; DUE TO PHONE HACKING SCANDAL

Rebekah Brooks has finally resigned as chief executive of News Corp.’s British newspaper, due to the News of the World scandal.  The recently exposed phone hacking shakedown caused intense pressure from investors and the public for her and all involved to resign.

Brooks is the former editor of News of the World newspaper and was in charge at the time the phone hacking took place.  Although she denies knowledge of the alleged phone hacking, many believe she knew exactly what was taking place, or should have known.  Especially since she was the “right-hand” for owner Rupert Murdoch.

It seemed like an injustice, that while hundreds of the newspapers employees were let go when the doors shut, she continued on without any repercussion.  Therefore, this seems appropriate and many will say, “its about time.”

Brooks sent an email to colleagues today outlining her reason for leaving; “As chief executive of the company, I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt and I want to reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place.”

She later released a statement to the press saying, “I have believed that the right and responsible action has been to lead us through the heat of the crisis. However my desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate. This is now detracting attention from all our honest endeavors to fix the problems of the past.”

Discussions regarding her deparature were likely in play for some time, because her replacement has already been announced.  Tom Mockridge will take over her role as top executive, he was previously the head of News Corp.’s Sky Italia division.

What were they thinking?  Was selling tons of newspapers so important, it was worth breaking the law?
