Coverage of the highly anticipated royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will be broadcast for the world to see. The wedding will take place at Westminster Abbey on April 29, and many are excited to share the experience.
The royal wedding will be available to watch on the Royal Channel Live Stream. It will be accompanied by a live multi-media blog put together by St. James’s Palace. They even created the above video to market the event. Additional marketing was extensive; creating media campaigns, setting up a royal fund, offering multiple press conferences and interviews. The royal couple went all the way, even further than the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
But in the end do American’s really care? Do we truly want to see lavish an over-the-top wedding, with a beautiful bride in a BILLION DOLLAR dress, riding in a luxury Rolls Royce, alongside a stunning groom in a stylish very expensive tux. In the midst of one of the worst economies in decades, a housing crisis, high unemployment, and a stagnant recovery, is this really what we care to witness?
While I understand it is Kate’s special day and they are royalty for goodness sake, do we really need to see how the indulgent rich royalty live? I know they set up a fund in lieu of gifts which is thoughtful, but is that enough? What would impress me more is if they took most of the money they are spending on this elaborate wedding and donated it to the homeless. In the end an overpriced wedding does not guarantee happiness, nor does it really matter in the end. If you love someone, the rest is just for show.
What do you think? Am I being too harsh or should they have toned it down a bit? Will you watch a wedding that you probably will never have for yourself, or will you keep your T.V. dark? Don’t get me wrong, I am extremely happy for them, but not yet sure I will watch.
UPDATE 4/29/11: SO IN WATCHING A BIT OF THE WEDDING, IT LOOKS LIKE THEY DID NOT SPLURGE TOO MUCH! GOOD JOB YOUNG ROYALS, LOOKS LIKE YOU DONATED MORE THAN YOU WASTED:). AND THEY DID LOOK GOOD:).
