Today was McDonald’s heavily promoted hiring day. They announced plans to hire over 50,000 worker’s across the country in one day. So I visited a McDonald’s in the city and suburbs of Chicago to see the lines of people waiting for that “guaranteed” job. But in the early afternoon outside the Rock & Roll McDonald’s on the near north side and later in the day in the southwest suburbs, not a peep. No lines, no media, no applicants.
On the ride home, a local radio station was taking calls and a young teen on the phone said she was hired at a south side location. Hopefully this means others were hired as well and I was just at the wrong McDonald’s, at the wrong time.
A local news anchor interviewed a man applying for an $8.00 per hour job to support his entire family, he had recently lost his business. Well, let’s hope he was able to secure a management position instead. With the price of gas surpassing $4.00 a gallon, that wage will barely get him to work, much less feed his family. But a McJob is better than unemployment.
They reported that 1500 of the 50,000 jobs were to go to Chicago area residents. So if you were hired today, during your 3 minute interview, please share your story in the comments section. It would be great to hear that it was a success, and someone actually secured a job.
Did they reach their goal? How could they determine who was truly qualified in such a short amount of time? Well, there is still time to apply online if you are interested in a McJob.
