The new Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel apparently wants full transparency. During the early phase of his Mayoral debut, he posted the full list of salaries for the 35,000 city workers on-line, for the world to see. If you are curious to see just how much each position pays, and aspire to secure a job with the city at some point, you may want to check out the FULL list here.
On Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel mandated that the list be posted online, saying “it is another step toward openness, as we create an administration that is accountable to the citizens of Chicago.” But I am sure the tech who posted the salaries may have thought otherwise, along with many others. It is always a touchy subject to talk about how much someone makes, so to have it publicly displayed may make some workers very uncomfortable.
While, I am not sure if it was a good decision, it is certainly interesting to see what they all earn. It shows salaries for everyone including sanitation workers, police officers, fire captains, secretaries, even Alderman. The list includes details about each employee including, their name, salary, and job title. It also breaks out the required furlough days, so you can see just how much they are losing by the new rules for required days off.
In all the years Mayor Daley was in office, this information has never been publicly displayed. But with the new sheriff in town, new rules come into play. I’m just not sure many city worker’s will be too happy with this new decision.
Does this make them vulnerable? What if you did not want your girlfriend to know exactly how much you make? Or your friends and family? Well, they do now. How would you feel if everyone knew exactly what you earned, would you like it? Post your comments here, it will be interesting to see how many are in favor of the change.
