It’s ironic that a man has died during a protest against motorcycle helmets. In a tragic twist of fate, as they tried to show helmets are unnecessary, 55-year-old Phillip Contos died in a crash as he lead the pack.
According to New York State Troopers, Contos suddenly hit his brakes and lost control of his motorcycle, in front of hundreds of motorcyclist on Saturday. The bikers Harley Davidson jerked, hit a guard rail and he was then thrown over his handlebars, hitting the pavement head first. It was sad to hear of his death, but hopefully it will help others understand the importance of wearing helmets while riding powerful and dangerous vehicles.
While they were fighting for their rights to have the choice of wearing a helmet, had Contos known he would die in a tragic accident, he may have been in favor of the law. Medical experts suggest had he worn a helmet, he probably would still be alive. Although he initially survived the crash, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Upstate University Hospital.
The Syracuse Chapter of ABATE President Christinea Rathbun told NewsChannel Nine, that they believe in freedom of choice, and bikers know the risk when they ride without a helmet. However, as I watch many reckless drivers on the freeway speeding without a helmet, it makes me wonder. While some may know of the risk, many others do not. In dozens of cases, I’ve watched careless speeding motorcyclist dodging in-and-out of traffic, with passengers on board. It always surprises me when I see them without a helmet, while putting others lives in danger as well.
If drivers of passenger vehicles which have more protection are required to wear seatbelts, motorcyclist certainly should have to wear helmets. This definitely appears to be a twist of fate, if you believe in a “higher up”, this is surely a message from above.
What do you think? Should they be required to wear a helmet? Can you imagine if they did not wear helmets in above video?
