It was good to hear the jury got it right. Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison, plus twenty years (basically more time after he dies). Last week, Jeffs was found guilty of sexually assaulting two underage followers after marrying them both. Church members deemed the arrangement “spiritual marriages”, which sickened the jury and public.
The leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, earlier fired his team of attorneys and represented himself in court. But as the Texas jury read their decision, he stood quietly for once.
Jeffs was convicted of multiple crimes last week. While he broke many laws, prosecutors had enough evidence to put him away for a long time. They used DNA evidence showing Jeffs fathered a child with a 15-year-old. But to seal the deal, they played for the jury disgusting recordings of what he said, while sexually assaulting a 12-year-old.
As a 55-year-old man, Jeffs knew exactly what he was doing. Using his faith to get away with breaking the law is an insult and ridiculous. It will be good to see him rot in jail where he belongs.
