It’s unfortunate to hear about a sports professional with so much promise, wasting a rare opportunity. Many young men dream about playing professionally, with the potential of earning millions. So it was a huge shock to hear that Chicago Bears wide receiver, Sam Hurd, was arrested on charges of conspiring to possess and distribute cocaine.
This past Wednesday, Hurd was arrested at a local Chicago restaurant, after accepting cocaine from an undercover U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. Once charged, Authorities announced that he was in the process of setting up a drug distribution network in Chicago. Even more surprising is that he was planning to become a “big time” drug dealer. He allegedly was in trying to get a supplier to sell him hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cocaine and marijuana weekly, to distribute and add to our already heightened drug problem.
Hurd was already under investigation in Dallas for five month’s, where he once played for the Cowboy’s. After hearing of the arrest, Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo said “We are very shocked about what we heard.” Angelo then released him from the NFL team’s roster.
He is now out on a $100,000 cash bond, but his troubles are far from over. What a waste of talent and opportunity. Young players look up to sports figures and this is not something they can be proud of. Hopefully he will be convicted and given a harsh penalty to show our youth, this is the wrong route to go.
What was he thinking? How disappointing…
