American Idol top three leave me truly wondering who will win it all. Tonight Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez, and Phillip Phillips all performed flawlessly, so this may be the tightest finish in the history of the show.
They all were able to return home this week and were welcomed by screaming fans. It was well deserved praise and you could feel their true emotion when seeing all that love and support. Josh actually made history, by selling out his arena (Burton Coliseum) in Louisiana for the first time.
The judges selected the songs for round one, which were fitting. Josh threw down with another standing ovation worthy performance, singing the Etta James classic, “I’d Rather Be Blind“. Jessica took on the Mariah Carey ballad “My All“ and while she did not bring the judges to their feet, she sang it with perfection.
Phillip had the challenge tonight of singing among the best two Idol contestants probably of all time, but he held his own. Pulling out his guitar and going back to his roots, he tackled “Beggin“ by Madcon and actually did a great job.
During the second round, idol contestants picked their own songs. It was a make or break decision for them all. If they chose the wrong song they likely would be heading home, so the pressure was on. Josh decided on a sure bet with the Beatles…and rocked “Imagine”. Jessica stepped outside the box with an Aerosmith classic (Steven Tyler) “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” and nailed it. And Phillip picked a perfect song for his voice, singing “Disease” by Matchbox 20. But let’s hope he really does not have one:).
Final round was picked by Jimmy Iovine and it showcased where he will take the contestants after Idol. Josh was given the Mary J Blige hit “No More Drama” which made me wonder why they gave him two female singers? But he actually sounded really good and sang it with pure passion. Jessica was given the challenging task of singing the Jackson Five hit “I’ll Be There“, and she hit a home run. Phillip ended the night with an amazing rendition of the Bob Segar classic “We’ve Got Tonight”.
So who will win American Idol 2012? Well, if it’s based on the entire season of consistent performances (and most improved), it goes to Josh. If it’s based on overall perfection Jessica goes all the way. If it’s based on teen fan favorite, Phillip has it sealed.
But in the end, this should really be down to Josh and Jessica and either one would deserve the crown of American Idol. However, Phillip could be the dark horse who pulls ahead, so it’s anyone’s game. It’s great to see them reach their dreams…they all have huge music careers ahead of them.
