MICHIGAN: 74-YR-OLD GRANDMA SHOOTS & KILLS GRANDSON; NO BAIL, FACES MURDER CHARGES

22 May

Recently we have heard shocking stories of mother’s shooting their kids.  But the new shooting in West Bloomfield, Michigan have many stumped.  A 74-year-old grandmother shot and killed her 17-year-old grandson as he pleaded for his life, for three minutes straight.

Jonathan Hoffman lived in a condo with his grandma Sandra Layne.  She apparently shot him in the chest and while talking to a 911 dispatcher, he was shot several more times with a 40-caliber Glock handgun.

As police arrived they heard the shots and she came to the door with gun in hand and confessed to the crime. The story is incredibly unbelievable, but to make it more insane is that Layne is a former school teacher, was married 28 years, is a mother of five and has nine grandchildren.

The young teen is being put to rest.  The grandmother is held without bail on murder charges.  The family is distraught and surprised.  The police don’t know why.  The woman had never been in trouble before. The world must be coming to an end.

When a grandmother kills her beloved grandson something must be in the air.  And it’s not good. Tragic.

This is so sadly, shocking and horrific. I read the story in disbelief..thinking of my own childhood with my grandma and grandpa. This is why stricter gun laws need to be in place. Why and how did she ever get ahold of a gun? This young man’s last words were telling someone that his gramma is shooting/killing me? I hope God finds a special place for him in Heaven and that the Devil has grandma’s “rocking chair” in the fireplace. Prayers to the young boy’s family and his grandpa too. Please keep us informed Brittaj. Blessings, Jo.

I agree, this is an appalling incident and my heart goes out to Jonathan’s family. I have to disagree, however, with the statement that this is why stricter guns law should be put in place. If an elderly woman cannot rightfully purchase a weapon, as permitted under our constitution, then who can be trusted to purchase and possess a weapon? The merciless killing was a result of an evil that could not have been predicted: the woman had no history of violence or mental health issues that anyone was aware of. What stricter law could have prevented this killing? Sometimes out of frustration and anger we blame the system, and sometimes rightfully so. But in this case, I doubt that anything short of a miracle could have stopped whatever drove this woman to kill. The apparent premeditation here leads me to believe that had a gun not been available, she may have found another weapon (perhaps poison…?) to do the job for her.
There should be a special place in hell for this “grandmother”.

Well put Trish K, I agree with your post. I do believe it was out of frustration that I chose to blame the “system”. I do hope Brittaj will keep us posted as to the updates on this sick, tragic story and pray for justice for this young man. And, I am sure “grandma” has special spot in the life ever-after. I wouldn’t want to be her neighbor. Thank you for your reply Trish. Jolene
