Real estate agents sometimes worry about safety. They often meet complete strangers to help with their housing needs, but this story adds new meaning to the danger involved when selling homes, on rare occasions.
Just before the holiday weekend on Friday, a gunman in Valparaiso, Indiana, took hostages during a stand-off at the Executive Group Real Estate office. After holding them for several hours at gunpoint, he released them late in the afternoon, but then shot himself in the head twice. Before being rushed to the hospital, he told police officers that an agent owed him money. The identified man was reportedly from Texas and later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
About 10 agents and staff were at the office at the time of the shooting, and an agent bravely called 911 after hiding in her office. As a SWAT team was preparing to enter the building, the man shot himself twice, but luckily he did not harm anyone else.
It was a scary scenario and this story has agents stepping up safety measures across the country. What a sad and senseless reason to take your life…no amount of money is worth this outcome.
