The shooting on Chicago’s famed Magnificent Mile last night is leaving residents stunned. While violence and shootings have plagued our great city for some time now, it has primarily occurred in the south and west side neighborhoods.
But now in the heart of the city? It is truly amazing that it happened in the upscale tourist destination. This is sure to grab the attention of many area residents, politicians and of course the police.
Last night around 12:30am man was shot on the corner of Ontario and Michigan Avenue. As the unidentified 31-year-old man stood outside his SUV, he was confronted by another man asking his gang affiliation. Immediately afterward the gunman opened fire on the victim. It is alleged that it may have been a gang related “drive-by” but this is still under investigation.
With the start of the Summer only days in, it is scary to think what the heat will bring this year. As crime typically peaks in hotter month’s and the city reporting over 200 homicides already…no end seems in sight. This is more than the deaths in Afghanistan this year?
The victim was rushed to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition; he suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen. No suspects were caught, but police are hoping nearby video or witnesses will offer some insight.
What must we do to end the violence? If it is spreading into new territories, we are desperately in need of a new plan of action. It’s obvious that our Chicago Police Department is working diligently to get it under control and should be commended for risking their lives daily. However, it seems they may need help getting the job done.
In my opinion, the city needs to once again toughen the penalty for these senseless crimes. Minimal jail time is just not enough…maybe a hardcore work camp and a minimum sentence of 50 years may do the trick? Not sure, but something definitely needs to give…we absolutely do not want to become out-of-control like Mexico.
Please post your comments with suggestions for putting an end to shootings and crime in our beautiful city. Maybe our Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy or Mayor Rahm Emanuel will stumble upon them and take our advice.
