CNN reported on the violence in Chicago today. It was a tragic look inside the increased crime wave and shootings in this great city. If you sign up for Chicago breaking news tweet alerts, it is disheartening how often you will receive shooting updates.
When did the Chicago Police Department lose control? How could this have happened so quickly? Well, with a 40% school drop-out rate, it’s not surprising that the murder rate is up 35% from last year. What is the true cause for the increase? According to gang members interviewed by CNN, they say it is the lack of jobs. Combine an uneducated drop-out with unemployment and this is just what you get…it’s called desperation.
If you are left without money or family guidance, how can you excel? Most troubled youth turn to gangs to earn cash by selling drugs to survive. And with drugs comes violence.
Many area residents have asked what needs to be done. The way to stop the violence is to do something different. Obviously the current plans to combat crime is just not working. Maybe it would help if they find ways to put the gang bangers and unemployed youth to work. What about free job skills training and partnerships with local business owners to offer them employment opportunities? If we get them off the street, maybe they will find better things to do than shooting or robbing people. Tougher penalties don’t seem to touch them…if you have nothing to live for, how would that make a difference?
Look, there is no easy solution. This is a build-up of years of one of the worst recessions many have experienced in their lifetime. The unemployment levels show a decline, but is this mainly because millions have now lost receiving their unemployment checks?
According to CNN many residents are even requesting the National Guard to step in and help. This would look like a war zone…which is close to what we are experiencing anyway.
It is tragic that such a high number of children are also losing their lives in the gun violence. If a new plan is not put into place soon…it will only get worse. Post your comments on what you believe should be done to end the violence…maybe just maybe they will listen.
