What’s trending on Twitter? Unfortunately, today’s suicide of Kansas City Chiefs NFL player 25-year-old Jovan Belcher. Fans around the nation were shocked to hear the news…but there was more. Apparently Belcher first killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, Kasandra M. Perkins, in an apparent murder suicide.
News reports suggest the troubled player killed the mother of his 3-month-old baby and then headed to see his bosses. When he reached the stadium he graciously thanked general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel for giving him a chance in the NFL. To their amazement he then he turned away, put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. They were stunned as he committed suicide right before their eyes.
This suicide was not the first for the NFL and will likely not be the last. Especially for this team, James Tyrer, a retired star offensive lineman for the Chiefs, killed his wife and then himself back in 1980, following some business failures. Sadly enough, many believe the stress of the game combined with too many hits to the head and personal problems may be the culprit.
Police authorities have not yet determined the reason, but some believe it stemmed from constant arguments which may have made him snap. Family members will care for their newborn…what a horrific way to start the holiday season.
This murder suicide should enlighten many in the sports world. Although players are offered counseling, it may need to become a requirement to avoid future unnecessary deaths.
