In a sad chain of events, the nurse who responded to an Australian DJ’s prank, was found dead today. It has been ruled an apparent suicide.
The story goes; Duchess Kate Middleton was taken to King Edward VII’s Hospital for severe morning sickness. DJ’s, Mel Greig and Michael Christian called the hospital and pretended to be the Queen of England and Prince Charles, asking for an update. Receptionist/Nurse, Jacintha Saldanha, transferred the call to a nurse who told them the Duchess was about to ‘get freshened up’.
It was reported that the DJ’s were laughing while using an awful accent, so they were surprised when their call was actually accepted. This goes to show…not all pranks are funny and they can ruin lives. The actual transcript of the conversation can be found here.
The nurse/receptionist was afraid she would receive a severe punishment. It was also a public humiliation stimulated by the media. Therefore, the distressed woman was worried about the outcome–which is what likely caused her to take her own life. The amazing thing is that the royal family had not filed a complaint and supported her all the way.
Today, the hospital released a statement; ‘It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff”. She worked at the hospital for four year’s and was a stellar employee according to staff.
New details out today suggest the DJ’s have deleted their Twitter accounts and are in hiding. Which is probably a good idea. They have also been pulled off the air and will likely be terminated. It is sad that a hoax caused so much pain and a horrible outcome. But they certainly did not think a hoax for fun would go this far.
Tragic…she leaves behind a husband and two children.
On another note; pranks happen every day. Do you really believe one prank would have caused her to commit suicide? To leave your children behind for one humiliating thing seems extreme…was the nurse really sensitive or was there more happening in her life?
UPDATE: DJ’s apologize and pulled off the air. Their radio station will donate $524,000 to a fund for family of the nurse who committed suicide.
