2/23/13: MIT ON LOCKDOWN; ARMORED GUNMAN REPORTED ON CAMPUS…MAY BE INCORRECT?

Published 2/23/13 @9am

Officials at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported a man carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor was spotted in a campus building Saturday morning.  The prestigious school is now on lockdown and students are encouraged to stay inside.

News outlets suggest several law enforcement agencies have responded and are investigating.  Information is continuing to flow as students, faculty and parents are once again paralyzed with fear.

The initial announcement came out about 7:30 a.m. when Cambridge police tweeted that a possible gunman had been reported on Mass. Ave.  Now that is really putting Twitter to work, but also shows how quickly an unfounded rumor can spread.  Twitter definitely has its pros and cons…

Update 9:30am:  According to multiple news outlets the report was unfounded and a press conference will follow.  How could this report be so wrong?  Was this a twisted hoax?

missed this story altogether, nothing in the papers, haven’t watched network news this morn. Email feeds from various newspapers I “esubscribe” to also had nothing. someone killed the story fast. I’m sure at a school like MIT EVERYONE has a smartphone with a twitter app, sure can spread rumors fast that way. It used to be email was used to spread rumors, but in retrospect email seems sooooo slow, it’ll be the snail mail of the near future.

Hey Tom, saw it on the news this morning and within 30 minutes the internet had changed the story. Twitter has its down side! 🙂

down side BIG TIME. Honestly BLOGS are probably the best place to get a balance on information, becuase of the cross talk. Dedicated News Sites (FOX News, MSNBC, even CNN) give us only ONE point of view.
