American Idol featured the second round of ladies in the semi-finals tonight.  It was tough decision on which five would make it through, because there was just so much talent.  But it also made me wonder…do looks matter?

While many extremely amazing girls went home tonight, it was clear that in many cases a pretty face went a long way.  Well, with the exception of the first one to sail through…yes, you guessed it, the over-the-top Zoanette.  She may not have movie star looks, but does have a great spirit and is totally unpredictable.  Her vocals were not my favorite tonight, but she was definitely entertaining.  Do you think she earned a spot?

However, when it came to the judges selecting the beautiful Aubrey Cleland…looks definitely helped her cause.  The dress she wore was fantastic and her beauty is undeniable. But her performance was not as good as 15-year-old Juliana Chahayed, who was sent packing, and I loved her song choice.  However, Aubrey does have the overall package so I can see why they kept her.

It was great to see one of my favorites, Candace Glover, head to the finals.  She was not at her best, but she can really sing!  I was not happy to see Jett Hermano leave because her vocals were spot on.  Of course the other attractive contestant to win over the judges was Breanna Steer.  However, I also enjoyed her song choice and attitude.  She deserved to make it through.

In the end, we are a nation where beauty does open doors. We love good-looking people and it helps in any industry when you are easy on the eyes.  As much as this is a sad fact….it is the truth.   Trust me, beautiful people get paid more, are offered more opportunities, and are more marketable.  But this can also be a curse, because they have more to prove and usually need to work harder to earn respect.

Did good looks earn some of the girls a spot in the finals?  Absolutely.  When you are split between great singers, it then comes down to who will sell more records.  Put an attractive woman on a CD case and it is a platinum hit!

To break it down…the final five girls to blow through this round are, Zoanette, Aubrey, Candace, Breanna, and Janelle.   it sucked to lose Rachel Hale…she rocked it!

I WISH I could have voted NO. BUT beauty IS in the eye of the beholder and Zoanette expresses beauty in so many different ways… from her talent to her tears. I would say she won’t make it all the way because she doesn’t have that sterotypical beauty (like you or me ☺), but WOW she is incredible. Interesting to note the 2 “prettiest” boys got kicked off last week, and both of them were incredibly talented. So maybe physical beauty won’t be the deciding factor this season, BUT once America votes things may change. Very few unattractive people become super stars (Janis Joplin is an exception, as is Joe Cocker).

Tom…they don’t look as good as us:) But interesting that the attractive guys went home. Think cute chicks have more backing from women and men. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder…there is someone for everyone out there. And I know some beautiful people who are ugly due to their attitude. Goes the same for some who you see past their looks because their beauty comes from within. Too bad great spirits can’t be packaged.

I love the “holding” comment “Your comment is awaiting moderation,” makes it sound like the comment should be more moderate. I know what it means, but there must be a better word for “wordpress” to use.

Thanks for the article, Britta. However, I somewhat digress. Looks don’t have to matter; plain Janes and average Joes can get paid more, more oppurtunities and be more marketable as the hotties can.   Thanks again, Cassie

I agree with you! I think both Juliana and Rachel should have stayed. I think it’s a good thing that these judges weren’t in place last year or we would never have gotten to hear Philip. He wasn’t pretty enough and he definitely wasn’t loud enough for them. They don’t seem to care about voices with character, they just want loud screamers or pretty faces.
