[VIDEO 2013] WARREN BUFFETT ANNOUNCES BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY MERGER…KOENIG & STREY – PRUDENTIAL RUBLOFF JOIN FORCES

On Tuesday November 12, 2013, billionaire Warren Buffett made an exciting announcement; about two legendary Chicago real estate firms set to merge this spring.  Luxury home sales powerhouse Koenig & Strey Real Living and Prudential Rubloff will join forces under his Berkshire Hathaway brand.  They are set to become one of the top real estate brokerage firms in the entire Chicagoland area, gaining a huge percentage of market share.

Essentially, Prudential Rubloff sold its ownership interest in their company to Home Services of America; a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate.  Making this the most notable real estate merger in Chicago’s history.  Both firms are leaders in the luxury housing market and their similar styles make this a perfect fit.

Over 400 agents showed up to a last-minute surprise meeting at the Drake Hotel, after receiving an email invitation late in the day on Monday (including me!).  It was a shock to hear about the merger, not because it was unexpected, but due to the complete secrecy of this news.  There were no rumors nor talks in advance throughout the company, at least not at an agents level.

The exciting part about this merger, is that they will now both fall under the prestigious Berkshire Hathaway brand.  The company was named The World’s Most Admired Companieswhich offers buyers and sellers even more confidence when using its services.  Major backing of these exclusive firms by Buffett was confirmed; since it is the FIRST time he has allowed a real estate affiliate to fall under the prestigious Berkshire Hathaway name.

[CRAWFORD VIDEO] 2013: CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS WIN STANLEY CUP….MAKES FANS PROUD!

[CRAWFORD VIDEO] 2013: CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS WIN STANLEY CUP….MAKES FANS PROUD!

WARNING: ABOVE VIDEO CONTAINS FOUL LANGUAGE – DO NOT LISTEN IF YOU NEVER HEARD THE “F” WORD!

The Chicago Blackhawks win of the Stanley Cup in 2013 brought joy and excitement to local fans.  It was made clear during the celebration rally held on Friday 6/28/13, where millions attended.   But one of my loyal blog readers (Tom:) shared the sentiment of many Chicagoan’s with a special message of pride.

While Goalie Corey Crawford’s’ speech was filled with foul language during the victory rally…his emotions just may have taken over.  This did not seem to offend the large crowd nor the fan who forwarded his heartfelt message.

I received the below email and thought it was worth sharing with readers who likely feel the same way.  While some may say, “it’s just a game”, it truly brings more meaning this year.  Chicago has continued to receive bad press for its heightened violence and we finally had a positive boost!

GREAT JOB BLACKHAWKS!  Check out their ad in the Boston Globe below…classy!

A MESSAGE FROM TOM….TRUE BLACKHAWKS FAN AND CHICAGO LOVER! (Thanks for sharing:)

Yesterday (6/28/13) the Blackhawks took out a full-page ad in the Boston Globe, as seen below (or click the link if you don’t see the picture).  Made me proud to be a Chicagoan and a Blackhawks fan.

The parade and rally yesterday was attended by over 2 million people.  One would expect many arrests to be made in such a large crowd… only 5 arrests were made, 4 misdemeanors and 1 felony.  If you are interested in the full story of the event you can go to www.suntimes.com or www.chicagotribune.com. The “highlight” of the day was Goalie Corey Crawford’s speech after being given the “honorary award” for MVP of the NHL, by the actual MVP of the final winning game Patrick Kane.  Crawford said is thanks, and added “of course it was a team effort, these guys worked their f#@%$’ nuts off to get here.” WBBM radio cut the feed right after the remark, but the NBC TV affiliate just kept going on, and actually joked about the remark.  It’ll be interesting to see what the FCC has to say, as they have recently lightened up on fleeting expletives (such as Bono’s remark at the Grammy’s).

I’ve now been alive for 3 of the 5 Stanley Cup wins for the Blackhawks.

2013: GOOGLE ANNOUNCES MOVE TO CHICAGO’S WEST LOOP!

2013: GOOGLE ANNOUNCES MOVE TO CHICAGO’S WEST LOOP!

It’s official!  Google, Inc announced plans to move to Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. Cost savings and extra space is probably driving the move from their current River North location, to the Fulton Market-Randolph district.

A Google spokeswoman confirmed that its 500-plus employees will move to the former Fulton Market Cold Storage building at 1000 W. Fulton.  The lease was signed for 200,000 square feet at the 10-story former storage warehouse…so the deal is sealed!  It’s anticipated move should happen by 2015, which is when their current lease expires.

Google employees in search of available nearby housing, make sure to contact a GREAT REAL ESTATE AGENT!    Feel free to send requests to britta.rivera@comcast.net for a free list of available properties.

2013: CHICAGO TURNS VACANT LOTS INTO URBAN FARMS; MAYOR EMANUEL ANNOUNCES NEW PLAN; FARMERS FOR CHICAGO

farmersAs a Chicago real estate agent, I see my share of vacant lots in depressed areas around the city.  Nearby abandoned buildings are an eyesore and haven for gang bangers and drug dealers. It is scary when showing homes in these neighborhoods, and makes my job a challenge.

Well, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has a new idea to combat a portion of this problem in the city of Chicago.  On Friday he announced the launch of “Farmers for Chicago“, which will essentially turn vacant city lots into urban farms for the next three years.

The new program will be supported by private donors and will turn about five acres of city-owned lots into urban farming developments. Chicago will partner up with the local urban agriculture organization Growing Power. Neighborhood residents will be trained by nonprofit organizations, to grow food which will be distributed to local farmer’s markets, restaurants, and grocery chains.

(VIDEO) CITY OF CHICAGO CHANGES 911 CALL POLICY ON 2/3/13 TO FIGHT CRIME; IS THIS ENOUGH?

The City of Chicago will change how they handle 911 calls effective February 3, 2013.  Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, says the new policy will put 44 police officers back on the streets to fight more serious crimes.

During an announcement to the press, McCarthy outlined the new guidelines.  In summary; the city will no longer dispatch police for minor crimes such as, passing bad checks, lewd phone calls, and dog bites.  They also added burglaries and petty thefts, where the perpetrator is no longer at the scene of the crime, and no one is in immediate danger.

It has been reported that the crime in Chicago during January was the deadliest since 2002, with 42 homicides (now up to 44 and counting).  This included the senseless shooting and murder of innocent teen, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton.  She had just performed for President Obama at the Inauguration, which caused the story to make national news.  Tragic.

Obviously the city is in trouble and we should applaud the Superintendent for coming up with creative ways to fight crime.  But seriously, putting 44 more cops on the street seems like it will have a minor impact.  It is still not clear if this is the answer, but we shall soon find out.

Above video includes a dramatization of a scenario at the end.  It is only intended to show what I thought about as they announced the new policy.  Clearly the video is a bit of a stretch and is an exaggeration.  Let’s hope we still get a live operator and people don’t get confused on which numbers to call.

Trust me, I understand crime is out of control and this is a serious topic.  Too many innocent children have lost their lives and the violence needs to end.  But is this the answer?  Please post your comments and chime in.  Feel free to add your suggestions…maybe Mayor Rahm Emanuel will take them to heart.
