TYLER PERRY can rest assured that his new crossover film was well-received. The release of “Madea’s Witness Protection” earned a strong $26.4 million at the box office during its opening weekend.
This is certainly a relief for the mega actor/producer/writer seeing it was a first of a truly diverse cast. While he received backlash from some of his loyal fans, it was a smart move for his growth. In a world of limited support for black films by the movie industry, this was needed to expand his audience.
If Perry is to excel and be accepted for his incredible talent by the general public, a crossover film was just what the doctor ordered. While it opened to mixed reviews, the surprise opening figures definitely shows he is still on top of his game.
Although it did not beat out “Ted”, earning a whopping $54.1 million or “Magic Mike” at $39.1 million it is still a part of history. This is the first time ever, two rated “R” movies earned over $20M in the same opening weekend.
The Tyler Perry fortune is sure to reach new heights in the coming years…maybe he will even challenge Oprah on the Forbes list. Or has he already done that?
