Today Judge Thomas Lipps announced the verdict in the Steubenville, Ohio football player rape trial. Trent Mays and Ma’Lik Richmond were found guilty of raping a drunk 16-year-old girl during a party.
The case caused national outrage due to explicit text messages, social media posts, cell phone pictures and videos spread on the internet.
Both Steubenville High School students will spend at least a one year in a juvenile jail. When the verdict was announced the two teens cried feverishly, then later apologized to the victim and community.
It was horrific crime and once again shows the lack of compassion found in many teens today. Social media adds to the insanity, offering an outlet for ridiculous posts. However, it also allows the truth to unfold right before our eyes.
Let’s hope this verdict teaches other teens that lewd behavior is unacceptable and sharing it with the world is plain foolish. This is a St. Patrick’s Day they will never forget.
