Comedian Chris Rock caused a bit of controversy this 4th of July Independence Day holiday; making some American’s angry and leaving others laughing. The backlash and support came after Chris sent out the tweet, “Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.”
Well, depending on who you ask they either thought it was racist or extremely funny. It really can be taken as just a joke by a comic or how many truly feel, but are afraid to say it. In today’s world of the “politically correct”, words like this go mainly unspoken. Had this come out of legendary comedian Richard Prior’s mouth, would people feel so offended?
While I know this may make some uncomfortable, I’m tired of the how rigid American’s have become over the years. Everything said these days seems offensive…which means most just sweep their true feelings under the rug. It was openness that allowed us to overcome some of the racial tension over the years. Without bringing up the past, no matter how crude, history is likely to repeat itself.
In my opinion, comedians are our only outlet for “politically incorrectness“. Without them or the crude humor found in shows like “Family Guy” and movies like “Ted” we will all put a blind eye to what some people are still feeling. If we were truly over racial tension in America, we would not even be having this discussion.
It would be good if we take note of the Brits humor and just keep it real. What do you think? Take the poll and chime in.
