2012: DIRECTV DISPUTE WITH VIACOM LEAVES CUSTOMER’S IN THE DARK; DROPS 26 CHANNELS; NO BET, COMEDY CENTRAL, MTV & MORE

DirecTV and Viacom are currently in a dispute which is affecting customer’s around the country.  According to the satellite company they dropped about 26 channels supplied by Viacom, due to a proposed price increase.

If you recently tried watching BET, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Spike TV and many other favorites, you are out of luck.  When you go to these channels the following message appears; “Viacom has forced us to remove this channel.  Visit directvpromise.com for more info.  Please enjoy these other shows while we work on getting this channel back on the air without unfair increase to your bill”.  Seriously?

While it is good to hear that DirecTV is standing up for consumer rights, their abrupt loss of some of my favorite channels is annoying.  Why not continue their dispute behind closed doors and let us enjoy our programming until they come to an agreement.  Did they ask their subscriber’s what they think?  No….they just told us after the fact.

It is said that the increase in fees could equate to 30% more on a customer’s bill.  However, with all the money they charge, it seems that they could afford to eat the cost until they negotiate a fair compromise.  Remember the days of FREE TV?  Although we have more choices today, it seems like we are overcharged anyway.

What do you think about your loss in channels?  Does this seem fair to customer’s who pay over $100 each month already?
